Context

Prior to my role as Curriculum Developer & Trainer at BGL, I was recruited by BGL to teach abroad at their client school, Tsai Hsing Private School in Taipei, Taiwan. I worked as an English Teacher at this school for two years from 2016-2018, and gained firsthand perspective on working and living in Taiwan. For this reason, BGL felt I was a good candidate for writing this article, in an attempt to increase teacher retention and assist with teacher recruitment.

Objectives & Purpose

The purpose of this article is to share my experience as a BGL teacher abroad, with a specific focus on the daily life and comforts of living in Taiwan. As a veteran traveler and teacher abroad, my goal was to share perspective on why Taiwan was both a great long-term option for living abroad. As short-term benefits of living abroad are often more evident, I aimed to appeal to veteran travelers, who sought employment abroad as a long-term option. Sharing my personal reflection and experience through BGL’s teach abroad program is an important contribution to recruiting and retaining teachers abroad.

Design & Development

To design this article, I utilized my personal experience and reflections on what traveling and teaching abroad has been like for me as a young professional. After working in three countries and traveling to over 20 countries, Taiwan was the first place that felt - for me - a comfortable place to stay and live for a longer period of time. I wanted this to be the focus of the article, so I created the title “A Home for the Restless Wanderer” with this in mind. As a first step, I created an outline to refine the points I wanted to elaborate on in the article. I decided that I would give a background of my travel experiences prior to Taiwan, discuss what attracted me to Taiwan, and reflect on the joys that I found in Taiwan that convinced me to stay for a longer period of time.

I felt it was also important to mention the accessibility of travel from Taiwan, to appeal to potential teachers that were looking for a home abroad that would still allow them to travel and explore Asia. To emphasize the accessibility of travel as a key point in my article, I added a photo section titled “Travel Hub” to share pictures from countries like Nepal, Malaysia, and the Philippines - all places that I was able to travel to from Taiwan. In addition to this photo section, I also included a “Teaching in Taiwan” and “Life in Taiwan” album to visually portray the attractions and joys of living in Taiwan that I discussed in my article.
