Objectives & Purpose
The Cars digital reader serves as an ancillary reading for physics topics covered by the classroom teacher of the DL program at Tsai Hsing Private School. The physics of cars was touched on in the classroom but the digital reader allows stuents to explore this topic on a deeper level. Students are given the opportunity to interact with different materials, activities, and questions throughout the reader that support the objectives for the topic that were outlined by the classroom teacher.
Design
To begin this project, I outlined the specific sections the book would cover with BGL’s VP of Instructional Design, Courtney Dayhuff. As a team, we decided that the book would cover parts of the car, the aerodynamics of cars, different car designs, and careers related to racing. I gathered information from the Grade 5 DL teacher’s Google Slides presentations and collected various articles, images, and websites that I would use as resources for creating the reader. I divided the content into four chapters and began assembling the resources I gathered accordingly.
Development
Each chapter began with a section that identified and defined the key vocabulary for that section (text and picture). Throughout the chapter, I explained each topic in simple, clear language, and included interactive widgets, classroom activities, and colorful font and subheadings. As a resource for second language learners, it was important that the reader had a simple and colorful design with an interactive element to meet these students at their current level of English ability. At the end of the reader, I cited all the sources that were referenced throughout the creation process.
Assessment
To informally assess students, I included comprehension checks throughout the reader. I created these comprehension checks by using “Review” widgets provided by iBooks Author. Comprehension checks were questions (text and/or picture) with multiple choice answers that allowed students to quickly check their understanding of the topic after each chapter. Other comprehension checks were included throughout the chapter after students watched a video, completed an activity, and interacted with complex material.
