Exploring Kunshan, China

A Quick Look…
This video was created for Banyan Global Learning to help recruit new teachers for employment abroad at BGL’s client school, Xing Kong Primary School, in Kunshan, China.
Context
During my time as a BGL employee, I was visiting their client school in Kunshan, China for a month to assist with teacher onboarding and step in for a teacher on sick leave. While I was there, BGL asked if I would be willing to create a promotional video that would share my daily life and experience as a teacher at Xing Kong Primary School in Kunshan, China.

Objectives & Purpose
The purpose of this promotional video is to share life as a teacher abroad in Kunshan, China to help recruit new teachers for employment at Xing Kong Primary School. Sharing this video helps ease some of the uncertainty of what it’s like to teach abroad in China. Potential applicants are able to get a feel of what the day to day life in China would be like, and would, hopefully, encourage them to take the chance and apply for an open position at the school through BGL.
Design
Designing the video began by consulting with Jacquelin Fink, VP of Curriculum & Professional Development, to determine the core components that should be included in the video. We identified housing accommodation and nearby convenience stores were an important element to share in the video to give potential candidates a feel for what their daily living situation would look like. We also decided that nearby attractions such as temples, gardens, lakes, and shopping centers were necessary to include. Dining options and night life were important aspects of the video as well, because it allowed applicants to visualize what they would be able to eat and do for fun as a teacher in a new country.
Development
To develop this video, I began by outlining the specific items, places, and experiences I wanted to show in the video. I noted which parts of the video I would be on camera versus the parts that I would be off camera filming the various scenes. I wrote a script for each part I would be on-camera speaking and practiced it several times before I filmed. After I finished filming each part, I compiled the files into iMovie and edited them into a 6 minute video sequence. I provided captions for clarity at different scenes, and added music to give the video a fun, upbeat feel. The final video was uploaded to BGL’s Youtube channel and shared with BGL staff, teachers, and applicants.
